Visopsys 0.8 hardware compatability

Post by Uityyy »

Here are some real-hardware testing results for Visopsys 0.8.
So far I've gotten it working on zero out of three machines tested.
I tested with one or two of these machines on pre-0.8 releases as well some time back -- not every single release -- and the newest I got working was some one from before there were separate floppy and CD releases. Anyways here are the details. If you would like me to do any further testing to pin down what the actual issues are, let me know.

Visopsys 0.8 usage report

**Visopsys 0.8 (CD) does NOT boot on a early AMD64 machine with both IDE and SATA drives**

Behavior:

Boots to the following message when booting off the IDE DVD drive set to primary master. Similar messages when booting from the SATA DVD drive or from the IDE drive with all other drives disconnected:

**Visopsys 0.8 (CD) does NOT boot on a Toshiba Satellite L305-S5919**

System goes into a loop of printing:

If an SD card is inserted into the card reader, the first set of errors will be replaced with something ending in "Unable to read the configuration file "/system/config/mount.conf"" and then the screen will blank to blue, display more errors, and blank to blue again a few times. A working mouse cursor eventually appeared, but without a desktop and none appeared within three minutes. A shutdown message did appear momentarily when I pressed Ctrl+Alt+Del.

Hardware:
This is a laptop with a Celeron 585 (x86-64) processor, 2GB of RAM, an internal hard disk, a DVD burner, and a SD card reader. A number of it's specifications can be found online, and I can retrieve more from the system if you're interested.

**Visopsys 0.8 (CD) does NOT boot on random Gateway Pentium 4**

Behavior:
Another machine where Visopsys says it can't find the CD drive.
At least the keyboard works on this machine.

Hardware:
Old Gateway tower with Pentium 4 @ 1.3Ghz and 128MB RAM.
Single internal hard disk (primary master).
Single CD/RW drive (secondary master).
Single 1.44MB floppy drive.

**Visopsys 0.8 (CD) DOES boot on VirtualBox on Windows 7**
Behavior:
Unlike on my real hardware, it ss able to locate the CD and boot in all cases except when it is the slave on a channel with no master.

Hi:

While I've done most of my VisOpSys operating/testing with QEMU, I've had the OS running on two different real computers: a 900 MHz Pentium III, and a more recent laptop (about 2008/9 timeframe). It doesn't run on my 2012 AMD64 or Compaq SFF II, so I'm batting about 50 percent. I think Andy is using laptops that are a few years older for testing, and you could ask him which models I suppose.

It's hard to make drivers for everything.
