Re: Visopsys discussion forum

Every OS has a niche. For security, I find myself running some variant of BSD. For using the latest and greatest open source project, that's only been ported to Linux, I might use that OS (I prefer Alpine). For a network-ready, quick starting live CD/USB OS, I might use Haiku on a PC, or RiscOSOpen ...

Re: Visopsys 0.81 Released

Hi Ron, thanks! Nice to see you again :-) Glad to hear things are working better for you. My new-ish workstation is similar to yours, except maybe a couple of years newer - 8-core, Athlon64, Asus or Asrock (something like that) motherboard, and Nvidia. It's got several USB (1+2+3) controllers and d...

Re: Visopsys 0.81 Released

Hello Andy. I understand about the little one. I had four of them myself soooo many years ago. Anyway - relative to the new version of Visopsys (.81): horray! horray! The .81 version of Visopsys now works on my Athlon 7860 dual core x86_64, which is on an ASUS N68 motherboard. It has 2G memory and i...

Re: Visopsys 0.8 hardware compatability

Hi: While I've done most of my VisOpSys operating/testing with QEMU, I've had the OS running on two different real computers: a 900 MHz Pentium III, and a more recent laptop (about 2008/9 timeframe). It doesn't run on my 2012 AMD64 or Compaq SFF II, so I'm batting about 50 percent. I think Andy is u...

Re: Bug reporting thread

One other thing Andy: I really like the new window decorations. The window icons look nice and crisp on my 1280x1024 screen. I suppose I could hook up a serial cable, and try to get more debug info for you. One of the last messages in the kernel.log file was "kernel logging stopped". So - ...

Re: Bug reporting thread

Hi Andy: I bet you're BWB (busy with the baby). Congrats again! I transferred the USB image for VIsOpSys version 0.8 to a mem stick, and ran it on real hardware (~5 year old ASUS Mini). It boots fine, displays the "install vs run" dialog, and displays the desktop when I bump the enter key....

Re: How to compile software in Visopsys

That took a long time to read!

Anyway, thanks for the update info. Sure seems like it'll be fun to see the results of all that hard work, after you've uploaded the revision.

Re: How to compile software in Visopsys

Hmm, were you trying the compile the 0.77 code, or the preview 0.8 code? (BTW, I'm finally getting around to doing the 0.8 release - just updating documentation and whatnot) The 0.77 code had a problem with booting debug ISOs in some cases. Also: are you building on a 64-bit OS? I've been using a 3...

Re: Problems with APIC on QEMU

I might have thought about it if I was like Ron the debugging ninja, but no, not really  Would it be exceptionally useful? LOL - If there were any ninjas on this end, I'd have submitted a bug patch by now. But, seriously, I'm slowly getting the parameters lined up so that I might be able t...
